The central design idea is the connection between house and city. With its structural context and the concept of the garden show, the location provides starting points that are developed and strengthened with the new building for the BSU.

The building is located at the intersection of several main network axes from the superordinate development plans for the Wilhelmsburg district. These axes result in essential parameters for the functional and thus building mass distribution on the site.

The design attempts to formulate a compact and clearly structured building structure. From the dimensional relationships of the internal use, the distance and noise protection requirements, together with the urban high point, a meandering cubature with open, courtyard-like areas is created. The high point at the southeast corner welcomes the arriving person from the essential direction of movement from the station to the new building. Towards the southern, open area and the adjacent vocational school to the north, buildings follow courtyards and structure the new building in an appropriate scale. Pedestrians coming from the direction of the station are guided in a natural way to the inner courtyard between the new building and the school and from there onwards.
